What makes a good lawn?
This is one of our most commonly asked questions from our clients and although it is a very "debateable" topic amongst green thumbs, there are specific
attributes your lawn should possess in order to maintain its healthy
exterior. Here are five significant indicators to help determine if
your lawn is healthy or if it requires improvements.
1. Your lawn boasts a strong shade of green
The first quality people often considered "good lawns" to have is a bright green hue. Don’t be alarmed if your lawn isn’t a vibrant shade of forest green!
The colour of your lawn can change throughout the seasons either due to environmental conditions or the type of species it may be. Colour is
definitely an important factor but it is not the only indicator that matters.
However, if your lawn exhibits several brown or yellow patches, this is an
underlying condition that will need be addressed.
2. Your lawn’s diet is full of the
right amount of nutrients
A common problem we witness in lawns is either a lack of nutrients
or too much; proper fertilization
can make or break a lawn.
Understanding how much fertilizer
is needed to nourish your lawn is critical to its overall survival.
3. Healthy lawns will retain their shape
After walking on your grass, shards should not break under your feet or
remain squished into the ground. Stiff, rigid grass suggests that your soil may
be compacted from a lack of root growth. A lawn that is healthy will have a strong bounce back and offer plenty of room for roots to prosper.
4. Less fungi more fun guy!
Fungi, or lawn mushrooms, are a sign that your lawn may be too damp. This could be from a periods of heavy rainfall (in which case these mushrooms will disappear on there own) or it could be caused by a drainage problem. If these not-so-fun guys appear frequently, you might have to start thinking about improving your overall drainage.
5. Luscious and full-looking blades of grass
If you look down at the ground and notice more soil than grass, your lawn may have a thinning problem. Like colour, the thickness of your lawn can vary
between seasons which is completely fine. However, if the ratio of soil to
grass does not change for the better upon the seasons changing,
it may be time for a professional investigation.
What are the benefits of lawn care maintenance?
Lawn care maintenance offers property owners a unique array of possibilities and desirable attributes. From air quality to water filtration, by taking care of your lawn you are taking care of yourself. Here are a few examples of the benefits of lawn care maintenance:
Air Quality – like all plant life, grass helps to ensure the quality of the air we breathe by absorbing carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is then converted into oxygen and released from the plant.
Noise reduction – Grass is able to absorb sound which, in return, can help to reduce the noise pollution around your property.
A Natural Air Conditioner – On a hot summer’s day, your lawn acts as its own natural air conditioner. Due to the grass’s ability to absorb heat from the sun during the day, it provides a cooling environment when you need it the most.
Appearance/Aesthetics – A luscious green lawn is never sore on the eyes. Lawns soften the overall appearance of any property.
Property Value – While undoubtably providing an appealing look, a well-maintained lawn offers more value to a property as it shows environmental care and promotes health benefits (in other words, a place worthy of spending time in)
Water Filtration – Lawns are powerful absorption tools that work to support entire communities. The water absorbed by your lawn helps to support your local watertable where it can be filtered and used all over again.
Why fertilizing your lawn is important
Just like humans need food to survive, plants need a similar set of nutrients. Fertilizer works to ensure the quality and longevity of your lawn. When you fertilize, you are encouraging healthy growth.
However, the saying “you can have too much of a good thing” also applies to grass. If you over fertilize your lawn, it will become sick; your lawn will dry out and it will be forced to turn yellow or brown in colour. At Green Zone Landscaping, we will ensure that your lawn will be fed and healthy all year round.
How does aeration help your lawn?
Aeration is the process in which small holes are pierced into your lawn. This enables your lawn to receive vital resources such as oxygen and water. By providing a space for these elements to flourish, your grass will continue to grow at a healthy rate.
The process of aerating is important because it encourages healthy root growth in soil that has been compacted where roots struggle to grow from the constricting density. Your carbon-packed soil will soon be transformed into valuable oxygen rich soil upon the implementation of aeration.
